Over the past couple of years, artist Jenna Sutela has been researching and working with Physarum polycephalum, often referred to as a natural computer. This yellow, ’many-headed’ slime mold is an ancient, decentralized, autonomous organism that processes data without a nervous system, operating via communities of coordinated nuclei that demonstrate advanced spatial intelligence. If the slime mold cannot find the resources it needs, it hibernates until better conditions arise; theoretically, it is immortal.

’Sutela approaches the question of present and future paths for life on Earth through the seemingly simple and radically different life of slime mold. Rather than looking outward, the book offers a look inward, toward life on Terra, which can be as unfamiliar and strange to us as life on other planets might be.’ Aslak Aamot Kjærulff, Orgs: From Slime Mold to Silicon Valley and Beyond

Jenna Sutela works with words, sounds, and other living materials. This publication expands upon her recent work, layering organizational and spiritual charts, or mazes, with the navigational intelligence of Physarum polycephalum.
