The Society Machine problematizes the picture of modern Sweden as an unmitigated success story. The featured artworks explore the consequences of industrialization – the cultural revolution that provided the foundation for the world-famous welfare state. What kind of society is created by standardization and all-compassing efficiency? How are man and nature altered by being viewed primarily as components of an economic system?

This book brings together new essays with documentation of the exhibition The Society Machine – The Industrial Age from the Perspective of Art, produced by curator Lisa Rosendahl and Malmö Konstmuseum.
